Child Protection & Safeguarding

Joseph Cash Primary School is committed to safeguarding the welfare of its pupils.

  • We strongly believe that all children have the right to live and learn in an environment which is safe and secure and free from any form of abuse.
  • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility.
  • All staff who come into contact with children and their families and carers have a role to play in safeguarding children.
  • All staff at Joseph Cash ensure their approaches are child centred at they always consider the best interests of the child.
  • We use the threshold model and are committed to multi-agency working and partnerships.
  • We follow Coventry’s local procedures for safeguarding and child protection.

In the interest of Safeguarding children, there may be occasions when the school has to consult other agencies without parent's prior knowledge. The school's first concern is the child's welfare and the school has a duty to protect the child at all times. Such consultation may result in a formal referral which could prompt visits from social care and/or the police.

We fully understand that this can be a very distressing set of circumstances, but we can only assure you that we follow the procedures laid down by the Coventry Safeguarding Board, a copy can be found in the link below.

In order to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, we will act in accordance with the following legislation and statutory guidance:

  • The Children Act
  • The Education Act
  • The Education (Pupil Information) (England) Regulations
  • Dealing with Allegations of Abuse Against Teachers and Other Staff
  • Working Together to Safeguard Children
  • Keeping Children Safe in Education
  • Procedures set out by the Coventry Safeguarding Children Board, which is available at www.coventry.gov.uk/lscb

Under the Education Act 2002 (Section 175) schools must make arrangements to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. Parents/carers should know that the law (Children Act 1989) requires all school staff to pass on information which gives rise to a concern about a child’s welfare, including risk from neglect, physical, emotional or sexual abuse. Staff will seek, in general, to discuss any concerns with the parent/carer and, where possible, seek their consent to make a referral to Children’s Social Care if that is considered necessary. This will only be done where such discussion will not place the child at increased risk of significant harm. The school will seek advice from Children’s Social Care when they have reasonable cause to suspect a child may be suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. Occasionally, concerns are passed on which are later found to be unfounded. Parents/carers will appreciate that the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead carries out their responsibilities in accordance with the law and acts in the best interests of all children.

The School's Designated Safeguarding Leads are:

  • Designated Lead Person for Child Protection:
    Helen Nelson | Headteacher
  • Deputy Designated Lead Person for Child Protection:
    Sara Scott | Deputy Headteacher
  • Kerri Harris| Pastoral Support Leader
  • Named Governor for Safeguarding & Child Protection | Melanie Harvey
  • LAC Designated Person | Sara Scott
  • E-Safety Lead | Hallam Rickett
